Jesus was coming but still two miles off, and Martha ran to meet Him. She ran two miles! But Mary stayed behind at the house waiting. She could have gone with Martha, but didn’t. She stayed behind.
Now, before we become critical of Mary for sitting and waiting, let us keep in mind that both women did in fact meet Jesus that day. Neither missed out on His presence, teaching and company. But Martha … She wanted more! She was driven to seek every possible moment with Jesus. She just couldn’t wait another minute to see Him, so her eagerness to be with Him drove her to drop everything and head out for two miles on foot.
What a beautiful picture of a heart hungry and anxious to meet the Lord. So eager and open! So willing and seeking. And in return for her hunger, she got extra time with Jesus. She got to walk with Him, talk to Him, she received more than Mary that day due to her seeking heart.
This Sabbath, usually Sunday, you have a chance to meet Jesus. Will you be Mary, Martha, or miss out entirely? Is your heart hungry enough to run to the House of the Lord? Will you be waiting there when the doors open, ready to spend every possible moment at a special place? Are you excited to meet Jesus? Or will you wait in the background, busy on other things, until the last minute?
What a blessing to have an eager heart! Jesus said “seek me and you will find me”. Are you eager to see Jesus? Are you seeking? Are you willing to walk a couple miles to see him a few minutes early? Or do you have other, “more important” things to do?
